The Palacio Real was built on the site of the Alcázar after it burned down in 1734. Felipe V wanted to outdo all other European palaces, and so he hired an Italian architect, and when that architect died, he hired another Italian architect, who finished it sometime before 1764, when he died. Felipe, on the other hand, didn’t leave to see it completed.
