Rome - St. Peter's Basilica
Saturday, November 04, 2000; posted by Lisa

One of the most interesting stops on our tour. Heard a mass, and saw the Pope.

A view of the arches in St. Peter's. One of the most impressive basilica I have ever visited. The intensity was augmented by the sounds (143k) of the mass taking place.

The colossal altar inside St. Peter's Basilica, within Vatican City. Listen (75k) to a bit of the mass.

Anita and Joe outside St. Peter's.

The large screen below the statue of St. Peter broadcasts the Pope speaking to the crowds in the rain.

Mass taking place inside St. Peter's.

Paris outside of St. Peter's.

Michelangelo's Pieta, under glass, inside St. Peter's Basilica. Hear (32.3k) the singing in the background — beauty and art surrounded by beauty and art.

The small red dot on the screen is the Pope. Click (61.8k) to hear the Pope bless the crowd. It was great to participate in this event.

The Swiss Guard has been defending the Pope since 1506. Their colorful red, yellow, and blue dress uniform is said to have been designed by Michelangelo. The 90 members of the guard have been recruited from Switzerland's four Catholic cantons.
